Gautam Gambhir’s coaching record can be analysed separately for white-ball and red-ball formats. While the former Indian batter has an impressive record as head coach in white-ball cricket, his Test performance isn’t at the same level.

Gambhir joined the Indian team following a successful stint with the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders, where he guided them to the title in 2024. He will be aiming to achieve more milestones during his tenure as India’s head coach.

Gautam Gambhir’s coaching record in T20Is

Gambhir began coaching Team India in Sri Lanka, which was the first T20I series following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the shortest format. Gambhir excelled in his debut assignment, as India won all three matches. He’s lost just 2 matches out of the next 20.

Gautam Gambhir’s coaching record in ODIs

In ODIs, he did not have an ideal start. India lost 2-0 to Sri Lanka on their home ground, with one match ending in a tie. He then won 8 consecutive matches, including the Champions Trophy 2025.

Gautam Gambhir’s coaching record in Tests

Gambhir’s record as a Test coach has been underwhelming, with India suffering a clean sweep in their home series against New Zealand. Lost 3 matches in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Luckily, the series against England ended 2-2 and then India beat the West Indies at home. But then another embarrassment came when they lost 0-2 vs South Africa at home.

Gautam Gambhir’s coaching record in IPL

Gambhir has spent just one season as a head coach in the IPL. As mentioned above, he won the title with KKR that year. During his tenure, he lost just 3 out of 16 matches. Gambhir also served as a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for two years, 2022 and 2023.
